The City of San Jose increased its hourly minimum wage to $17.55 per hour on January 1, 2024. This rate applies to all work employees perform in San Jose, unless the employer identifies and can prove some exemption to California’s minimum wage laws. San Jose’s rate is higher than the state of California’s $16.00 per hour minimum wage.
Other jurisdictions can also have their own minimum wage laws, like on the county level in County of Los Angeles. There may be overlapping minimum wage protections at the city, county, state, and federal level. Generally, the highest overlapping hourly minimum wage law for employees will generally apply in any given geographic jurisdiction.
