Do Parents Have A Right To Take Time Off Work For Parent Teacher Meetings?

California Labor Code Section 230.7 gives parents and guardians the right to take time off from work to participate in certain school or childcare activities.  Employers are not required to provide paid time off for this.  This law prohibits employers from retaliating against employees who request time off to appear at their child's school due to a disciplinary action or meeting with a teacher or administrator.

It's designed to support parents' involvement in their children's education without fear of adverse employment consequences. Employees must however give their employers notice of the time off request within a reasonable time.
