Arakelian Enterprises Must Pay $104k for Alleged Female Hiring Discrimination

Earlier this month the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs announced it reached a conciliation agreement with Arakelian Enterprises, which allegedly operates as Athens Services, a Southern California waste collection and recycling company, to resolve alleged hiring discrimination against female job applicants.  Gender discrimination in hiring is illegal under both federal and California laws.

Arakelian Enterprise will pay $104,658 in back pay and interest to 54 female unsuccessful applicants and provide 10 job opportunities to female applicants for open positions. Additionally, the company allegedly will review and revise its hiring process and train its managers to prevent future hiring discrimination.
