The United States has made strides towards fostering diversity and inclusivity in various industries. However, one sector still faces significant challenges in achieving gender equality and inclusion. The construction industry. To address those shortcomings, policymakers passed measures to support and empower women and nonbinary individuals within the construction industry. California legislatures’ biggest initiative was probably establishing a Women in Construction Priority Unit in 2022 (the “Unit”).
The Unit is required to develop materials tailored for employers and unions to facilitate the recruitment and retention of diverse talent in construction; establish and maintain an internet website listing workers' rights to ensure accessibility and empower individuals to assert their rights effectively; and develop training materials catered to navigating health, safety, and wage and hour laws which play a pivotal role in equipping women and nonbinary individuals with the knowledge necessary to succeed in construction careers.
Finally, the Unit may also establish interagency agreements to promote gender diversity and inclusion in construction.
