We are now less than 6 months away from the United States’ Election Day, 2024. It’s a good time to review employees’ political and voting rights at work.
In California, employers cannot have rules, policies, or regulations that prevent, modify, or influence employees’ political activity. First, employers may not forbid their employees from becoming candidates for public office. Second, employers cannot force employees to change their political views. Third, employers are not allowed to threaten to fire or actually fire employees for their voting or political activity.
The reality is that some employers will try to influence their employees’ votes and political activity, and some employees might welcome it.
